Solar Energy Management Engineer

Subsystem Summary:

The Aeronautics department decided to design & build an innovative, fire detecting, solar powered UAV. The new members of this particular sub-system will mainly deal with solar panels and energy management. Collaboration with the Hardware Development, Structural, and Aerodynamic Design sub-systems is crucial for the realization of the solar panel and energy distribution system.

This is a crucial “collaboration” since the main objective will be, as detailed below:

Position Description:

  • Solar cell selection in order to collect the required solar energy
  • Solar panel design and constructive feasibility
  • Energy calculation and distribution so as to supply all the avionics onboard during flight
  • Battery selection and application
  • Peripheral electronics selection, like the MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracker) and BMS (Battery Management System)
  • Solar panel simulation (to estimate energy production and flight time)
  • Battery simulation (to assess thermal energy losses and charge/discharge characteristics)
